A Short-term Longitudinal Study on the Effect of Play Therapy

Abstract
The studies on the effect of play therapy through group play therapy were briskly conducted while those through individual case studies are rare. Therefore, this study examined the effect of play therapy through a short-term longitudinal design. The participants consisted of 141 paris of children who were older than 6 years and treated with at least 3 sessions of play therapy and parents who participated in parents education, 51 therapists. After 6 months later, 101 parents and 51 therapists took part in the survey.For the effect of therapy, the participants were asked to report the level of reduction on children¡¯s main problems and behavior problems treated in parents counseling. First, the level of reduction on children¡¯s main problem from mother¡¯s report was investigated. Among responses, 87% of mothers reported the problems were reduced while 13% of mothers reported they felt no change Second, the difference in the effect on children¡¯s behavioral problems was also investigated. Symptoms were reduced in every domains of children¡¯s behavioral problems. It proved that play therapy had an effect on shrinking, depression/anxiety, social immatureness, concentration problem, aggression, emotional instability, internalized problem, externalized problem, and overall behavioral problem of children.
